When you are listening to your favorite songs or attending a conference meeting, even a minor audio issue on your laptop or phone can be frustrating.
Audio issues can arise due to many reasons that include hardware to software breakdown or similar. Some may require a bit of change to the settings from the user’s side, while some issues require you to consult a technician.
Keeping that in mind, here we have shared some of the most common audio issues faced by users on their digital devices, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones.
1. No Sound in One App
There might be a possibility that you couldn’t hear any sound from one app while it works perfectly with other apps. In that case, check if the program’s volume isn’t turned off or muted.
Try uninstalling and installing the app or program again. If using Google Chrome or Firefox, the single tab can be muted while browsing. Check if that isn’t the case and then restart your device. If there’s no hardware issue, one of the recommendations is to check the audio settings on the device and tinker with them.
2. Inappropriate Audio Settings
Sometimes your computer or phone speaker works properly, but the problem lies in the output settings of the computer. If you have more than one audio device connected to the computer, the device may be playing sound from the wrong device.
It occurs mostly when you use USB audio devices. To fix this, you need to go to audio settings and select your preferred output audio device.
3. Damaged Wires and Cords
Next, you should check that all the cables and wires are firmly connected, and they aren’t damaged. It is always a good decision to unplug and plug your device if you can’t hear any audio.
If there is a dent or damage in the wire, you need to repair them. In case of severe damage, you will need to replace the cord with a new one. Avoid tangling the cord to prevent such issues in the future.
4. Bluetooth Connectivity Issue
In the case of a Bluetooth headset, before pairing your device to the computer or laptop, make sure to disconnect it from another device. Sometimes, the Bluetooth devices connect automatically to the previously paired devices.
So, if you can’t connect your headset to your computer or smartphone, make sure it isn’t already connected to any other paired devices. If so, disconnect it and then retry.
5. Outdated Audio Drivers
Initially, the audio drivers seem to work just fine but start displaying performance issues over time. So, it’s better to check if the audio drivers are updated, or they have gone obsolete.
If not updated, check for any available updates; sometimes, upgrading to the latest audio drivers can solve the issue. If that doesn’t fix your problem, make sure to uninstall and install the drivers again. You can easily install the drivers from a legitimate online source.
6. Default Audio Enhancement
Audio enhancements are built-in Microsoft features in Windows computers that are designed to retrieve better sound quality from the audio devices.
However, these enhancements can sometimes cause a sound issue. In this case, switch off the audio enhancement by navigating to the Sound section in the Control Panel.
If you are having a problem with multiple devices, then make sure to repeat this process for each one of them from the playback list.
7. Broken Hardware Component
Once you have checked all the audio settings, detect if the problem exists in the hardware of the device. You may run the diagnostics test to detect any hardware malfunctioning.
Alternatively, try connecting your Bluetooth or USB headset to the computer and play any song to it. If you could hear songs from your headset, it is clear that the hardware was at fault. If the speakers are not working, you will need to get them repaired.
8. Dust Inside the Speakers
Sometimes, the dust accumulated inside the speakers causes audio issues. Cleaning your computer’s internal speakers, phone speakers, headsets can remove all the dust stuck inside the tiny mesh.
You can use normal cleaning stuff and a cotton cloth to clean the digital devices. Always keep in mind to disconnect the device from the main power before you start the cleaning chores.
9. Silent Mode
If you can’t hear any sound from your phone, then check if your phone isn’t on silent mode. For iPhones, check the Ringer switch; make sure it moves forward towards the screen, and you can’t see an orange mark on it.
The orange mark tells that the device is in silent mode. For iPads, scroll down from the top right corner to view the control panel and make sure silent mode is off.
10. Garbled Sound
If you hear garbled, crackling, or muffled sounds on your phones while making calls, then there might be a problem with your network connection.
Change your location, find better network signals or switch your internet connection from WiFi to Mobile Data. If the problem persists, there might be a hardware issue, and you may need to get it repaired.
